Mining is a fascinating subject for many. First off, the entire process of how precious gems, minerals, coal, oil, and other natural gases are created is mind-boggling, but learning about how humans have managed to mine these precious minerals and fossil fuels is a testament to human ingenuity.
SITECH Rocky Mountain offers Cat® MineStar™ technology that helps you with your mining operation needs. Compatible with any brand of equipment, this technology can help extend your equipment life, enhance safety, and improve performance. Below, we’ll take a look at some of the old mines still in operation today. Get in touch with our team to get started today!

OLD MINES STILL IN OPERATION TODAY
Khewra Salt Mine
The Khewra Salt Mine located in Pakistan was discovered around 320 BC when Alexander the Great’s horses starting licking the ground while he was on his war campaigns. Various empires took over the production of salt at this mine, from the Mughals to the Sikhs and the British. However, mining as we know it today did not begin until 1872 when the British began to mine the salt. This mine produces what we call Himalayan salt, which is the salt that has a distinct pink hue, making this mine a popular tourist attraction. This mine is 19 stories tall, most of which live underground. Based on estimates, it is expected that this mine will be producing salt for another 350 years. It is the second-largest salt mine in the world today.
Chuquicamata Copper Mine
Located in Chile, the Chuquicamata Copper Mine (or Chuqui for short) was believed to have been a source of copper for the Incans and the Mayans. Modern and organized mining of this site began around 1879 when it was used to extract brochantite, a beautiful green-colored sulfate copper mineral that is extremely rare. Today, copper and molybdenum, which is used in alloy production, are the two main minerals mined here. The mine is now operated by a state-owned company in conjunction with the Chilean government. By volume, this mine is the largest open-pit copper mine in the world. Interestingly, it is the second deepest open-pit mine behind Bingham Canyon in Utah.
Kiruna Iron Ore Mine
The Kiruna Iron Ore Mine is located in Lapland and is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world, as well as one of the most modern, utilizing modern mining technology, such as what SITECH Rocky Mountain offers, to be efficient and increase production. It has been in continuous operation since 1898, supplying iron ore to the Scandinavian countries that surround it. However, it was discovered in 2004 that the mine is causing the town of Kiruna to gradually subsidence, or cave in. This means that eventually the community will have to move a bit further away.
Bingham Canyon Copper Mine
Bingham Canyon Copper MIne is a mine located in Utah and has been producing copper on a regular basis since 1906. One of the most productive copper mines of all time, this mine is operated by Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation and is a National Historic Landmark. It has been a tourist attraction due to its open-pit construction, but was shut down to tourists due to COVID-19. A concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery were built on this site, too, to make it easier for copper refining processes to be performed. This mine is the second-largest copper producer in the US and helps supply the US with about 15% of its annual copper needs.
Skouriotissa Copper Mine
This copper mine has been known to supply copper to the surrounding tribes and peoples of Cyprus since 4,000 BC. In modern history, this mine has been in continual operation since 1914 with a few interruptions caused by World War II, during a coup in 1974, and due to a fall in copper prices. This mine is very unique in that it yields many minerals in addition to copper. Asbestos, bentonite, cement, gravel, sand, chromite, and sulfide have all been mined here, and it is estimated that gold and silver may soon be mined here, too.
Wilgie Mia Mine
Located in Australia, Wilgie Mia Mine has been a red and yellow ochre mine for between 27,000 and 40,000 year, according to estimates by scientists. Interestingly, it is believed that some of the red and yellow ochre that this mine has produced over the centuries had been used in ancient cave paintings all throughout Australia by native peoples. The brilliant yellow and red minerals found here are due to haematite and other iron compounds in the surrounding rock. This mine remains the largest and the deepest ochre mine in the world, and many suggest this mine is the oldest continuing mining operation in the world.
Williamson Diamond Mine
The Williamson Diamond Mine is not as old as the others on our list, but it is considered one of the oldest continually operating diamond mines in the world. Located in Tanzania, it produces hundreds of thousands of carats of diamonds every year and employs over 1,000 miners. This diamond mine is extremely deep at 300 feet, but because it is located on a kimberlite volcanic pipe, the diamonds themselves are easy to extract. This open-pit mine is known for its high-quality pink diamonds, although production levels have decreased steadily since its peak days during the first 25 years it was open.
