We love to honor the builders here at SITECH. We’ve already listed some of the most impressive architectural marvels around the world. This time, we thought we would list some of the weirdest. So enjoy the weirdest buildings from around the world.
Esplanade
Located in Singapore, the Esplanade Theatre is an architectural marvel that will have you turning your head. Planning for construction was started in 1992, and the building opened in October of 2002. It required to architectural firms working in conjunction to get it made. The entire building has been noticed to have the unusual shape of a durian, a tropical fruit, and has also been likened to the eye of a fly. It is marked by dome shapes punctuated by glass windows. The reliance on glass windows was due to the amazing views in every direction from the Esplanade.
Agora
No, this isn’t a reference to the ancient Greek agora, or marketplace. Rather, the Agora is a building that represents an organization, and means “Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture. Launched in 2003, this bright yellow-orange, angular building draws the eye from everything else in the vicinity. It has the general shape and look of a rocket ship, and reflects the unusual modern theme. The organization is known for helping underdeveloped countries get access to new and effective agriculture technology.
Le Futuroscope
The Futuroscope is located in France, in the Parc du Futuroscope, and multimedia based French theme park. It has 3D, and even 4D, cinemas, with many of its attractions being the only one of their kind in the world. It is located in Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In 2015 alone, the park had 1.83 million visitors, with 50 million having attended since the park’s opening in 1987. The Futuroscope building is an angular mess of mirrored square panels. It looks less like a solid shape and more like a boulder falling and breaking mid avalanche. Looking at it, you’d think navigating it would be a nightmare. But the park is well laid out, with tons of attractions, from a robocoaster, to dynamic movies, to magic shows, to outdoor games, to sports and video games.
London City Hall
City Hall houses the Greater London Authority (GLA), made up of the Mayor of London as well as the London Assembly. The whole building has a somewhat oblong tilted egg shape, easily distinguishable on the horizon. The bulbous shape is reportedly for decreasing energy consumption, however studies on the building show that it is relatively inefficient in its use of energy. Deriving its shape from the modified sphere, the building has no conventional front or back entrance.
Solar Furnace, France
A solar furnace is a structure that utilizes concentrated solar energy in order to create extremely high temperatures, usually for industrial use. The Solar Furnace is a building located at Odeillo in the Pyrenees-Orientales in France. France is the country that built the first modern solar furnace in 1949, and the Solar Furnace building is also the biggest solar furnace in existence to date. It looks like a normal building, except one side has inverted solar panels which concentrate solar energy.
