Humble Origins

It may come as no surprise that the first bulldozers ever manufactured on a commercial scale came from the United States. It was companies like John Deere, Caterpillar, and Case Tractor that paved the way for this amazing machine, providing early models to a wide range of industries, including construction, agriculture, and waste management.

Scope

It is a big job manufacturing a bulldozer. For starters, every component needs to be designed with perfect accuracy using CAD software. Parts made to these specifications will then be made in factories all over the world, before being shipped to an assembly plant. There, larger parts like the drivers cab and hydraulic cylinders are put together before they are assembled onto the drive train. Just like with the design process, computer software monitors the entire manufacturing process as well.

Big Fish

Many of the same companies that started the bulldozer on its track to success are still the major manufacturers around the world, including Caterpillar and John Deere. However, Caterpillar takes home the prize of largest manufacturer of bulldozers around the world. Other major competitors include JCB and Komatsu. While all these manufacturers produce bulldozers, their models are often different sizes, and for different applications.

Alternative Applications

Besides industry uses, bulldozers have also seen use by militaries around the world. For instance, the Israel Defense Forces use a Caterpillar D93 that they have affectionately nicknamed “Doobi”. It is used during combat to raze structures that get in the way of unit movement.

In the Wrong Hands

Because of their extreme power, bulldozers can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. Take Marvin John Heemeyer of Granby, Colorado for example. In 2004, he drove an armored Komatsu D335A through his town following a zoning dispute. This destroyed 13 buildings in the town, causing seven million dollars worth of damage.
